What is Acupuncture?
Kalgoorlie Physiothereapy now offers Acupuncture as an effective form of complementary medical treatment for a variety of health issues. Acupuncture is suitable for anyone wanting a natural, drug free approach to their health care. It can treat a variety of health conditions, whether it be injury, illness, physical or mental and focuses on treating the underlying problem as well as the presenting symptoms.
What it Involves
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, flexible, sterile needles into the skin at specific points for the purpose of treating various disorders. Acupuncture operates on the theory that each person has a constant energy flow that circulates around the body. In Chinese medicine this is known as Qi. Pain and illness occur when the flow is blocked or stagnates for some reason. There are hundreds of acupuncture points down the length of the body which are named after vital organs. The acupuncturist chooses specific points according to the patients individual detailed diagnosis and treatment plan. They are stimulated in order to redirect the energy flow and maintain the bodies homoeostatic balance by improving a person’s natural healing ability. As a result acupuncture can be used in a number of ways and can affect hormonal, nervous, immune, circulatory, respiratory, and muscular systems.
Effective Treatments using different Modalities of TCM
Acupuncture encompasses a variety of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques other than needling, each one with a specific method and function. Our acupuncturist will help you choose the specific techniques (one or a combination) which will suit you best, thereby maximising the physical and physiological benefits.
Additional Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Techniques available at Kalgoorlie Physio
Cupping Therapy – Cupping involves the heating of specialised glass cups to form suction onto the skin. Using different techniques it is used to improve circulation, and stimulate the peripheral nervous system. It acts by drawing out the toxins, cold, wind and damp from the body, in order to rebalance Yin Yang and Qi energy. It works by lifting the body’s connective tissue, loosening any adhesions and restoring blood flow to areas of the body that have been restricted.
Electro Acupuncture – Is a pulsed electrical current applied to the needles and replaces vigorous hand manipulation. It is most commonly used with pain conditions. Advantages of using this therapy is that it shortens the time of treatment, reduces the number of treatments, it gives a clearly defined sedation or tonifying effect.
Moxibustion – Is the burning of the herb Moxa (Mugwort) and is used to warm, move qi and blood, disperse cold and eliminate damp. It can be used in many different ways depending on the patient’s needs.
Gua Sha/Scraping – Gua Sha involves repetitive scraping motions using specific Gua Sha tools over muscles to move stuck Qi and Blood. It releases the Exterior mimicking sweating, and moves Fluids. In a modern medical construct these fluids contain metabolic waste that congested the surface tissues and muscles. Gua Sha promotes circulation and normalises metabolic processes.
Ear/Auricular Acupuncture – This therapy treats and prevents diseases by stimulating certain points on the auricle with needles, ear seeds or tacks, which can be further stimulated by the patient in between treatments. It is widely used for addictions, weight loss, and mental disorders.
