Don’t let the cold whether freeze up your joints.

With the cooler went months approaching, we know that there are some people out there who are dreading it. Not because of the actual temperature but for the fact that they are not looking forward to having aching and sore joints.

Osteoarthritis or arthritis as it is more commonly refer to affects about 1 in 11 people Australians that is 9.3% of the population.

Arthritis is a condition whereby the cushioning between the joints becomes thinner and worn out and cause anatomical changes within the joint itself. This can affect people throughout the year but during the cooler months the symptoms can be a lot more difficult to manage. According to Harvard Medical Professor Robert Jamison, the reason the pain increases, and symptoms are more difficult to manage is due to the change in barometric or atmospheric pressure.

Reduced activity during these times is also a contributing factor, as a decrease in activity causes a decrease in the production of synovial fluid which lubricates the joints, which means the less you move the less your joints are being lubricated resulting in increased pain and stiffness.

While there is unfortunately no cure for Arthritis, a simple lifestyle change and can help you to manage your symptoms and pain levels and help to maintain both movement and function. Some simple ways to mange the symptoms of Arthritis is to keep the affected joints warm by dressing warmly and using heat packs over the joint. One also needs to keep active so going for a short walk, using a push bike or working in the garden are good options if you can do so. If you are unable to get out another option would be an indoor exercise program which will keep you moving and activate without having to brave the elements.

Just remember exercises do not have to be boring anything that will get you moving works.
